Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these drugs must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become starving," said an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
